Preston International School joined the rest of the world to celebrate Black History Month that comes up in October every year. The Black History Month is globally recognized as a month set aside for the remembrance and celebration of black achievers who had suffered degrading and inhuman treatment in the bid to ensuring that Africans were liberated from the shackles of bondage from European powers.
In commemoration of the black history month celebration, the management of Preston International School appointed Mr. Oluwole Fayanju and Mr. Toyin Olumoko to coordinate the programme. In consequence of this, Mr. Toyin Ajayi (the Proprietor) was invited to give an opening speech about Black History Month Celebration which commenced at Preston International School on Monday 4th October, 2010. His speech was outstanding, educative and thought–provoking and it evoked the applause of all Prestonians and staff present.
A time table was put in place during the course of the celebration and students rehearsed and presented various programmes based on their houses, clubs and classes with supervision by the teachers. Teachers and students displayed a high sense of cooperation and dogged determination towards ensuring that black history month celebration records a huge success.
Drama club presentation was entertaining, educative and fantastic. It revealed a terrible ordeal which blacks (Africans) had passed through before they eventually gained their independence. The Press club also played a vital role in the programme. It cast light on how the celebration of black history month came into the limelight and the great black achiever that inaugurated the celebration. In this regard, the contribution of a brave and famous man - Carter G. Woodson (father of black history month) would forever remain indelible in the annals of history. Mention must be made of African music and poems that were presented in English, French and Yoruba languages which lend credence to African culture as a unique and natural endowment from God. Both students and teachers learnt about the need to remain focused, determined and steadfast in every situation. The biographies of famous black achievers’contribution of black civil rights leaders such as Rosa Park, Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Obafemi Awolowo, Kwame Nkrumah among others and maps were displayed on the school’s notice boards to educate both students and staff.
On a final note, the contribution of teachers and students was highly commended. Everyone displayed a high sense of readiness and enthusiasm to make this year’s black history month celebration a huge success. May the Almighty God keep us alive to witness more of this.
