Life At
Preston - Olasunade Ladenegan
Along Akure/ Owo
Express Road stands out a world – the future of this great nation: Preston
International School. To me Preston is not a school; but it is a little world
and I want to talk about life in Preston International School at Km 6,
Owo-Akure Road, Akure. There are many aspects worthy of mentioning but I want
to write mainly on the following: hostel, academic, social and sports life.
I’ll like to start with the hostel life.
The Hostel Life: Man needs a place to stay where he can have shelter and
protection. The school provides that facility for us (the students). We have
separate hostels for boys and girls. The hostel has some rules that we follow
and a strict timetable. The timetable for weekdays (Monday to Friday) is as
follows:
5:30am: Wake Up
5:30 - 5:45 : Morning Devotion
5:45 - 6:15 : Morning Duties
6:15 - 7:00 : Bathing and Preparation
7:00 - 7:40 : Breakfast
7:50 - 8:20 : Assembly
8:20 - 2:00 : School Hours
2:00 - 3:00 : Lunch
3:00 - 4:00 : Siesta
4:00 - 4:20 : Tuck shop time (snacks)
4:30 - 6:20 : Co-curricular Activities
6:30 - 7:30 : Dinner
7:30 - 9:00 : Prep Time
9:00 - 9:30 : Evening Activities
9:30pm : Lights Out
The hostels are divided into four houses: Shekinah, Tornado, Terra and Aqua.
The Social Life: There is a saying that all work and no play makes Jack a dull
boy. At Preston, we don’t want to be ‘dull Jacks’, we know that people have to
interact and so the school is a mixed school. In the dining, we are allowed to
sit by gender (2 boys and 2 girls) on a table to allow interaction. This
School organizes a show called ‘Variety Night’ towards the end of every term.
The show avails us the opportunity to showcase our talents. We normally have a
lot of presentations during the Variety Nights and we do enjoy ourselves
before returning to the hostel. Another social event is our Cultural Night. On
Cultural Night, different cultural groups are represented and the show is
usually very interesting. We also have a lot of other Social events like,
Birthday Parties, Presentations and so on.
The Academic Life: The School has a code of conduct deeply rooted in praise
(reward) and punishment (sanctions). The School believes firmly that success
breeds success. That is why the School gives rewards to excellent studies. The
School has a system in place to enforce discipline and at the same time reward
obedience. That is why we us the house point system. The house points system
is a system that if a student does something tangible he/she will win a house
point.
Students are given awards at the end of the term for best overall, good
behavior, academic achievement and so on.
The Recreational life: In line with the School’s ideology to produce
well-rounded students, sport is a major pillar in Preston International
School. The school wants us to be physically fit and so, every Tuesday and
Saturday, we go for Sporting Activities.
There are many activities: Handball, Volleyball, Badminton, Athletics, etc.
Our last inter-House Sports took place in the School. A lot of people came and
it was really a memorable event. Different training and drilling activities
are carried out under the tutelage of a coach specially employed for this
reason.
That is all I have to say about the life at Preston International School.
